County silver for Canterbury Gymnastics club.
On November 15 th and 16 th the Women’s Arttistic Kent Championships were held at Mote Park Leisure Centre in Maidstone and attracted 250 entrants, representing the top 20% of the county’s gymnasts. The two day event was particularly exciting for the younger members of Canterbury Gymnastics Club, in total, 7 children ( aged 7 to 9) were entered for the artistic Competitions, which was the largest number of children that the club had ever entered. For four of these, it was their first ever competition and all did well, completing the first round at level 14.
In the second round, at level five, three gymnasts Katie Milburn, Millie Fairweather and Maria Whitaker competed. For Maria ( aged 9) it was to be a dream come true. Maria had all the required moves for all four pieces. The first event was the floor which she completed with a dynamic and graceful routine, the choreography allowing her to display dramatic and precise movements. This put her in second place with a very high score of 12.65. she stayed in the running with her performances on Vault and Bars, and then, after all other competitors had finished the other events, it was Maria’s turn to perform on the nerve-wracking beam apparatus. She completed her routine perfectly, including a beautiful backwards walkover, and earned a score of 11.40 and the silver medal.
Earlier in the month on November 9 th several boys from Canterbury Gymnastics Club in the under 9 age group were invited to attended the Pegasus South East Regional Development Competition, an event designed to encourage boy gymnast. In the 4 piece competition (which includes floor, vault, rings and parallel bars) Thomas Fox won third place and Aaron Kelleher came fourth. This was an excellent result for both boys, especially as it was their first competition.
